Un-Dam the Klamath!
The Department of Interior is scheduled to make a final determination about dam removal in March 2012. This decision will be based on an Environmental Impact Statement / Environmental Impact Report (EIS / EIR), which analyzes alternative actions. Alternative 2 is for complete removal of four dams. The other alternatives are for partial, or no dam removal. According to the draft EIS/EIR, dam removal and the accompanying restoration projects will: 1) Create more than 6,000 jobs from dam removal and restoration alone. This does not include an untold number of jobs from tourism and sport fishing. 2) Increase the production of Chinook salmon by 81%. 3) Open 420 miles of historic fisheries habitat. 4) Dramatically reduce toxic algae and the accompanying threats to human health. The public comment deadline is December 31st. Background information, and the EIS/EIR, are available at: KlamathRestoration.gov. |
