This election cycle has been filled with misleading facts, anger, and antipathy. Yet it doesn’t have to be this way. When I look at my community, I see people and organizations who are interested in starting productive conversations about how to change our country’s approach to dealing with its problems.

According to FlackCheck.org, $54,140,760 has been spent on advertisements where at least one assertion has been found to be deceptive by fact-checking organizations since December 2011. It is happening all across the ideological spectrum, and is coming from a variety of Super PAC’s and other organizations. How can I be an informed voter when over $50 million dollars is being used to distract me from the truth?

The amount of money being spent on deceptive advertising should be a call to action for every active citizen who cares about the future of this country. We must inform ourselves and our fellow citizens and strive to promote fact-based political discussion, so that we are not duped by the very system that is supposed to represent us.

A new initiative out of The George Washington University called Face the Facts is creating a space for civil, fact-based discussion.
