  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a new Technical Report that favors routine infant circumcision, claiming that the benefits outweigh the risks.   • The U.S. is the only industrialized nation circumcising a majority of boys for non-religious and non-medical reasons. In fact, countries all across Europe are now looking to prohibit (and in the case of Germany, outlaw) infant circumcision.

  • Infant circumcision is indefensible from a medical, ethical, and human rights point of view.

  • Infant circumcision drains scarce public health resources for a medically unnecessary procedure. If the rationale is to stop the spread of sexually transmitted disease, there are far less harmful, more cost-effective, and more reliable ways to achieve this.

  • I believe the AAP must retract this dangerous and unethical Technical Report immediately on the basis that it is inaccurate, biased and misleading, that it fails to address ethical and human rights issues, and that – as a result – more boys and men will suffer the pain of circumcision and the permanent damage it causes.
