America’s baby girls are at risk!

Last week, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a new policy statement proposing changes to the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Act, a law that has prohibited any form of FGM in the U.S. since 1996.

Now, the AAP wants to change the law to allow a “ritual nick” of girls’ genitals, so families whose cultures accept FGM don't send their daughters overseas for the full genital cutting procedure.

We can’t afford to allow our leaders to destroy the progress we’ve made in outlawing genital mutilation for our baby girls. We must act quickly – fill out the form below and send a message demanding that the AAP revoke its policy statement IMMEDIATELY.

I am writing to you to express my shock upon learning of your role in the adoption of the new "Policy Statement--Ritual Genital Cutting of Female Minors," issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on April 26, 2010. The new policy, crafted by the Committee on Bioethics, states that pediatricians should be allowed to offer families a "ritual nick" procedure on the genitalia of girls, as a way of "remaining sensitive to the cultural and religious reasons that motivate parents to seek this procedure for their daughters" - despite the fact that female genital mutilation of any kind is expressly prohibited by Federal law. This reversal of the AAP's 1998 statement, which paralleled the unequivocal Federal ban of FGM in the United States, calls into question the AAP's ethics and motives underlying the new policy.

I believe in the human rights of all babies to intact bodies. ANY alteration or cutting performed on the normal, healthy genitalia of minors is an unethical act that ignores the well-established human right of all individuals - male, female, and transgender - to bodily integrity. Rather than calling for more unnecessary genital surgery on unconsenting children, pediatricians should be standing up for children, and protecting them from bodily harm. Therefore I demand that this outrageous and unconscionable policy be retracted immediately.
