Tell Doctors To Put Down The Knife!

Every day, thousands of doctors across the country take newborn baby boys from their parents and subject them to a medically unnecessary, painful, life-altering surgery—circumcision.

Parents place their trust in their children’s doctors, and it’s the doctors’ responsibility to tell them: (1) no medical organization in the world recommends circumcision; (2) the foreskin is a normal, important body part; and (3) babies are people with rights, and no baby has consented to circumcision.

That’s why Intact America is asking doctors to Put Down The Knife! and stop the needless, unethical cutting of America’s baby boys.

Send a message to America’s doctors by writing today to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and telling them to stop selling and participating in this unethical procedure!

American parents rely on their family doctors for the best advice in caring for their children. As a matter of ethics, that advice can no longer include infant circumcision -- a medically unnecessary, potentially risky surgery that no medical authority in the world recommends. That is why I am asking your organization to take a stand against circumcision, and to recommend to your members that they cease performing this surgery.

Doctors have a responsibility to tell parents that circumcision does not aid in hygiene, it doesn't make the normal penis "look better," and it does not prevent disease. They have the obligation to "do no harm" to their patients -- the babies who will live with the consequences of this permanent removal of healthy genital tissue.

Although anti-foreskin advocates are using AIDS and STD prevention as yet another reason for promoting circumcision, the facts do not support their claims. European nations, with circumcision rates near zero, have lower HIV/AIDS rates than the United States. Every study done in a first-world country fails to link circumcision with HIV. And, circumcision in America does not correlate with HIV or any other sexually transmitted infection in any ethnic population or geographic region.

Furthermore, circumcision has significant risks, including infection, hemorrhage, impaired sexual function, and even death.

Many doctors say that they do circumcisions because parents request it. Under accepted bioethical principles, parents cannot give proxy consent for elective procedures. Thus, just as physicians must refuse to alter the genitals of a girl child, they must refuse to surgically alter the genitals of a boy.

On behalf of the babies who are your patients, and who cannot speak for themselves, I am begging you and your organization's members to take a stand, to Put Down The Knife!, and stop circumcising babies and children.
