Dear Friend of the Species,
The remarkable recovery of gray wolves in the American West and the integrity of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) itself is at stake and could be decided by Congress in the next 48 hours.
Take action now to protect wolves and the Endangered Species Act
Following a series of back door meetings with the governors of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, Interior Secretary Salazar Ken Salazar indicated that he will support legislative language to eliminate life-saving protections for all gray wolves in the Northern Rockies
.
Under Secretary Salazar's plan, wolves would lose all Endangered Species Act protections and be put beyond the reach of the ESA forever unless the Secretary, at his or her sole discretion, chooses to restore them to the list of threatened or endangered species. This is an unprecedented attack on wolves and the Endangered Species Act.
Stop Congress from removing Endangered Species Act protections for the gray wolf.
Congress has never before removed an animal from the Endangered Species List. This legislative maneuver would set a dangerous precendent opening the door for members of Congress to determine which species survive and which would become extinct, based solely on politics, not science and law.
Congress could act on the legislation at any time. Please urge your Senators and Representative to reject Interior Secretary Salazar's plan.
Thank you for speaking up for endangered species,
Sincerely,
Leda Huta
