Friend of the Species,
Last week, we sent you an email about upcoming legislation that would open all federal lands to hunting, allow import of polar bear carcases from Canada, and limit the EPA's ability to protect wildlife and people from lead poisoining.
We heard over the weekend that the House will vote on H.R. 4089 on Tuesday. We need at least 20 more emails from your state today.
Please send your Representative an email today, urging that they oppose this radical bill.
Thank you,
-Leda

Take action for polar bears and other wildlife. Tell your Member of Congress to oppose H.R. 4089. |
Congress is considering a radical bill that would limit protections for wildlife, open virtually all federal lands to hunting, and allow for the import of polar bear trophies from Canada.
Please tell your Member of Congress to oppose H.R. 4089.
This bill would amend the Marine Mammal Protection Act to allow trophy hunters to bring polar bear "trophies" taken in sport hunts into the United States if presented as having been taken prior to the May 2008 Endangered Species Act listing. The USFWS and a federal court have rejected similar attempts to import trophies after the ESA listing went into effect. Congress should not be giving special treatment to a small group of wealthy trophy hunters.
Take action: tell your Representative to oppose H.R. 4089.
H.R. 4089 would open virtually all federal lands to sport hunting. There are millions of acres of federal lands already open to recreational hunters. If H.R. 4089 passes, federal agancies would be required to disregard existing land use and wildlife management policies and open these lands to hunting. Further, it would prevent National Environmental Policy Act review of these decisions.
H.R. 4089 would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from protecting the public, the environment, and wildlife from toxic lead poisoning caused by lead ammunition. As many as 20 million birds and other animals--including bald eagles1-- die each year from lead poisoning. Lead-free ammunitions are readily and economically available. Congress should not be getting in the way of the EPA's ability to protect the public and wildlife from lead exposure.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to wildlife and wild places.
Sincerely,
Leda Huta
