The Center for Environmental Health needs your support to fight powerful companies that will say or do anything to preserve a market for the toxic chemicals they put in the products you use every day.
Case in point: the makers of chemical flame retardants. Peer-reviewed, scientific studies link many flame retardant chemicals with lower IQs, cancer, and abnormalities in thyroid and metabolic function. Studies also demonstrate that many uses of these toxic chemicals do not actually protect people from fires.
These highly toxic chemicals are in our products for one reason: to earn profits for powerful companies. And every time CEH and our allies write, sponsor, and support legislative or regulatory efforts to restrict the unnecessary uses of flame retardants and other toxic chemicals, the industry’s hired guns don the cloak of public interest. And they lie like rugs.
They claim that certain highly toxic flame retardants are safe. (Untrue.) They claim that proposed regulations would increase the incidence of fatal fires. (Untrue.) They claim that regulations on flame retardants are racist. (Huh?) They pay burn victims to appear at hearings. (Shameful.) They hire corrupt experts to tell unspeakable lies that mislead legislators. (Outrageous).
The flame retardant industry’s front group has spent millions of dollars to hire lobbyists, buy legislative votes, and pay slick PR companies to repeat the same lies that hid the truth about tobacco for decades. Why? So they can profit by exposing you and your family to chemicals that cause cancer, infertility, obesity, and developmental disabilities.
For sixteen years, CEH has stood on the frontline of this and other battles to protect your family from toxic chemicals. With your support, we’ll continue telling the truth and winning the vital public health battles of our day.
Please make a generous, tax-deductible donation to help CEH stand up for truth, health, and justice. Your gift of $100, $500, $1,000 or more will help CEH continue to fight for a healthy, toxic-free tomorrow.
P.S. As I write this, CEH’s office is bursting at the seams with breast feeding pillows, nursing gliders, sleeping wedges, changing pads, mattress toppers, children’s furniture, nap mats, and dozens of other products. We’re preparing to test these items for unnecessary, toxic flame retardants. Each test will cost $175. Please donate today to help ensure CEH has the resources to do this and all of our vital work!
