Ask them about nonprofits before you vote

In the Virginia Governor’s race, one sector of our economy has been largely ignored: nonprofits.

The nonprofit sector generates $8 billion in wages and $461 million in tax revenue for the commonwealth. Virginia is home to 350,000 nonprofit workers, and countless others who volunteer.

Before we vote, we must ask the candidates how they will partner with us to strengthen our state.

Please send this message to BOTH Bob McDonnell and Creigh Deeds. We want all candidates to recognize the power and economic value of our sector.

Dear Candidate for Governor of Virginia

I have been following the campaign for governor very closely, and it seems there is one very important sector of our economy that you have overlooked.

In Virginia, nonprofit businesses employ 350,000 voters and engage hundreds of thousands more through volunteerism. The sector generates $8 billion in wages and $461 million in tax revenue for the commonwealth of Virginia.   I am one of these 350,000 nonprofit employees, and I am a voter.

We nonprofit employees and volunteers would like you to consider delegating a senior official within the Administration with the tasks of –

•	Facilitating existing and potential partnerships between nonprofits and state, county, and city governments; 
•	Inspiring, offering incentives, and encouraging volunteerism statewide; and 
•	Articulating the business interests of nonprofit organizations within state government.

Before I make my final decision as to whom I should vote for, I would love to hear your positions on how you will partner with the nonprofit sector.

We look forward to working with you to building a strong relationship between the Governor’s office and the nonprofit sector of Virginia.
