Take Action: Support the End to Harmful Flame Retardants

Tell Congress: It is Time for Chemical Reform.
Our Children and Our Oceans Should Not Carry the Burden of Outdated Legislation!

It is time to send a message to Congress to ask them to support
the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act (HR 5820).

Marine animals and our unborn children are unattended victims of our lack of safety standards for the production of chemicals. In OFS’s PBS film Call of the Killer Whale, we looked at the health risks in both human babies and killer whales from persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals. It has become evident to the entire OFS team that the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) under EPA is inadequate in eliminating toxic substances from marine life, from all life. The TSCA created a baseline for the EPA to regulate the use of toxic substances, but since its inception 33 years ago, major flaws have surfaced and new legislation is increasingly necessary to protect human and marine life from future exposure. And now scientific studies are linking many of the toxic chemicals we have been using over the past few decades to cancers, learning disabilities, obesity and diabetes.

The hope of the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act is to create proactive regulations that will prevent further harm to humans and all creatures we with which share this blue planet. Time is of the essence. As we better understand the toxicity of many chemicals in every day products and the impacts they are having on the health of our planet, we need to take Action immediately. Europe and Canada have, it is now our turn to show our leadership in providing legislation that ensures the safety for us all.
