Take Action: Support the Shark Conservation Act

At a time when we see so much of our natural heritage, on land and at sea, imperiled, we need strong leadership more than ever and the only acceptable position is to support bill AB 376 (without amendments) which aims to ban possession, sale and distribution of shark fins in California.

Sharks are being slaughtered in unprecedented numbers, over a 100 million a year, and the ultimate effects on the ocean environment are unknown. A majority of sharks are brutally killed in a process called shark finning, where the shark’s fins are sliced off and its living body is thrown back into the sea. These discarded sharks are unable to swim and either starve or bleed to death, drown, or are eaten alive by other fish.

Sharks are responsible for keeping marine ecosystems and food webs in check, and their decline has major consequences. The removal of predators at the top of the food chain trickles all the way down to the smallest of creatures in the ocean and to the very foundation of the world’s marine ecosystems. The underwater paradise as we know it cannot sustain its vital balance without the shark.
