Winter Outing 2012
Join Us for a Backpack Hike and Camp at Tracy Ridge February 4!
The purpose of the 2012 Winter Outing is to gain winter camping experience and to enjoy our beautiful winter weather. We will meet at 3PM on February 4, 2012 at a small parking lot just north of the entrance to Tracy Ridge on the west side of Route 321. We plan to break camp by 1PM on February 5, 2012. Please bring all of your own gear and food. See these links for suggestions for gear, food, and behavior in winter conditions: REI, or Backpacker Magazine, or do your own on-line research. A 4-season tent, 0 degree bag, and a "closed cell" sleeping pad are highly recommended. Please feel free to contact Cathy Pedler if you need more information: 814-454-7523, cpedler@alleghenydefense.org

We will be camping in an area adjacent to the old Moses Johnson farm. We can still identify this 1800s farm and explore it today! We will be camped in a large rock area that is somewhat sheltered from the wind and elements. The
large rock area, behind the Johnson Farm is less than a half mile hike from the parking lot. If you would like to join us during the day Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning for a fun exploratory hike (or hikes!) in the area, or to enjoy our campfire with us later on Saturday evening, without camping out Saturday night, you would be more than welcome! If we have enough snow, the Johnson farm is a perfect place to snowshoe or
cross country ski. The near-by Tracy Ridge campground (and adjoining Johnson Farm) has an extensive hiking trail system to explore. So come on out for the day on Saturday, or spend the day and night with us! We may even do a short after-dark hike on Saturday Night! Get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors!
