Reuters News: Pennsylvania broke law on natgas water

(Reuters) - Pennsylvania regulators are illegally allowing natural gas companies to withdraw water from rivers and streams for use in the Marcellus Shale drilling boom, an environmental group claims.
The Allegheny Defense Project says the state's Department of Environmental Protection has no legal right to permit drillers, as it does, to take millions of gallons of water from rivers in the western part of the state....more

Marcellus Hunting in Elk State Forest
On July 24, and again on August 8, 2010 Allegheny Defense Project board, staff, and volunteers visited the Elk State Forest to view the EOG Marcellus Shale gas drilling sites in the our state forest lands. Elk State Forest currently has over 16 permitted wells in Mckean County. We visited the area of the forest south of Kersey to check on a cluster of permits that we learned about from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Rig Report data. According to documents recovered in our July 8, 2010 file review at DEP, EOG plans to drill 500 wells in Clearfield and Elk Counties within the next four years, just in the Susquanna River Basin.....more

Litigation Update
Over the past two and a half years, seven lawsuits have been filed against the Forest Service regarding its regulation (or lack thereof) of oil and gas drilling on the Allegheny National Forest. The oil and gas industry filed six of those lawsuits claiming the Forest Service has no authority to protect Pennsylvania’s only national forest from the damaging impacts of oil and gas drilling....more
