  • Urge Abbas to Be Cooler than Cool!

     Hello Folks,

We're doing it! Abbas will soon be cooler than cool!

  • Take Action! Urge Iran to Release the Seven Baha’i Leaders!

    فارسی

    Background
Iran's seven Baha'i leaders are serving 20-year prison sentences solely on the base of their faith. The two women and five men formed the national leadership of the Baha’i community in Iran, known as ‘Yaran’ or ‘friends,' and tended to the spiritual needs of Iran's largest religious minority. The Baha'i community faces systematic discrimination by Iran’s government, including denial of education and government jobs, home raids, arbitrary detention, and cemetery desecration. The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran has noted that the Government's tolerance of an intensive defamation campaign meant to incite discrimination and hate against Baha'is violates its obligations as set out in article 5 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The seven leaders' initial sentence of 20 years imprisonment was met with outrage all over the world. One month later, the appeals court reduced their sentence to 10-year jail terms, but their original 20-year sentences were reinstated in March 2011.

  • Urge Iranian Authorities to Provide the Special Rapporteur Access to the Country

    فارسی

    Background:

  • Urge Iranian authorities to halt the execution of Iranian-Kurdish citizens

    فارسی

    Background:
Write to Iranian authorities and embassies worldwide expressing concern over the execution sentences of two Kurdish citizens, Zanyar Moradi and Loghman Moradi. Both were sentenced to death by public hanging on December 22, 2010. The verdict was passed down by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided over by Judge Salavati, after a trial which reportedly lasted only 20-mintues. Both men faced dubious charges of moharebeh (enmity against god), for alleged involvement with the murder of the son of the Friday Prayer Imam in Marivan, and for membership in the Komala Party. On October 12, 2011 it was reported that the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the execution sentences.

Send a letter to IRI authorities urging them to

    1. Halt both prisoners’ executions;

    2. Investigate all allegations of torture and ill treatment and prosecute and hold any perpetrators accountable;

    3. Guarantee that both defendants are afforded a fair trial and due process, including the right to independent legal representation and the right to present a full defense.

    4. Reject any “confession” or “evidence” obtained under torture, ill-treatment, or threats of abuse;

    5. Respect the detainee’s rights as prisoners, including the right to freedom from abuse, access to adequate medical care, and the right to visits and communication.

  • Urge Iran to Address the Country's Human Rights Situation

    فارسی

    Background
Send an e-letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Judiciary, and various Iranian embassies worldwide expressing your concern for the ongoing crackdown on Iranian political and human rights activists, ethnic and religious minorities, artists, and members of opposition groups. Urge Iranian authorities to stop applying severe punishments, including execution, arbitrary detentions, and enforced disappearances for activities that are not considered crimes under international law. Write to Iranian officials detailing your concern for Iranian Christian Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani, who remains at risk of execution for “apostasy;” for the artists, actresses, and filmmakers detained for peacefully exercising their right to expression; for Kouyhar Goudarzi who has been detained with no news available about his condition; and for the four opposition members who are enduring an “enforced disappearance.” Urge the Iranian government to meet its legal obligation to end the human rights crisis engulfing the people of Iran by ensuring Iran’s citizens are afforded basic human and civil rights guaranteed under international law.

  • Urge Iran to Stop its Assault on the Country's Artists

    Updated 7/27/2011
Pegah Ahangarani and Mahnaz Mohammadi have been released on bail. The e-letter has been updated to reflect these new developments.

    Background
Send an e-letter to Iran's special rapporteur, the UN High Commissoner for Human Rights, and the UN's Secretary-General to express your concern regarding the intensifying crackdown on Iran’s artists. In the last few weeks, the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) has arbitrarily detained several actresses, directors, and photojournalists.

Two actresses - Ms. Marzieh Vafamehr and Ms. Pegah Ahangarani - were arrested on unspecified charges. In June, two more were detained: Ms. Mahnaz Mohammadi, a documentary filmmaker and women’s rights activist, and photojournalist Ms. Maryam Majd. The reasons for their detentions remain unclear, though it appears to be part of Iran’s ongoing, systematic crackdown on artists, filmmakers, writers, human rights defenders, and activists.

The right to free expression put forth by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights notes that “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression” including the right and freedom to “hold opinions with interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media…”

If the IRI has detained these four simply for free expression, it is imperative the international community demands their immediate and unconditional releases. Urge UN officials to call on the Iranian authorities to release all prisoners of conscience held solely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, immediately and unconditionally and to respect the right to free expression, as defined under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a state party.

    Background
Send an e-letter to various UN officials and world authorities urging them to continue addressing the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran. • E-letter to World Leaders: Urge the IRI to halt the execution of Shirkoo Moarefi

    Background
Mr. Shirkoo Moarefi, an Iranian-Kurd in his early 30’s, faces an alarming possibility of execution by the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). His charges are “acting against national security” and “enmity with God.”  Mr. Moarefi is one of over twenty Kurdish prisoners sentenced to death in Iran. He was previously a refugee living in Iraq, but was arrested in October 2008 after returning to Iran.

During his first trial, Mr. Moarefi was sentenced to death for alleged ties to a Kurdish opposition group; however, his mother continues to insist that her son has never taken part in any armed struggle against the IRI and that residents of the village where he was arrested can testify that he was not carrying arms when arrested.

Despite his execution sentence being upheld by the Supreme Court and being sent to the Judiciary’s Implementation Unit, neither Mr. Moarefi’s lawyer nor Mr. Moarefi have been served with papers. His lawyer has expressed concern over the risk of an illegal execution, especially because executions have been carried out without informing the prisoner’s lawyer or family. Further information can be found on the International Campaign for Human Rights website.

Please send an e-letter to various world leaders and UN officials urging them to take action on Shirkoo Moarefi’s behalf!

  • E-letter to World Leaders: Call on the IRI to allow protests, release detained opposition figures

    Background
Write to the world's foreign ministers and ask them to address the increasingly brutal crackdown on Iran’s human rights activists, opposition members, and peaceful protesters in recent weeks. Urge the international community to call on the IRI to immediately desist its oppression and violence and to respect the basic human and civil rights of their own citizens, including the right to assembly, association, and expression. Ask the world's leaders to step-up and call for the release of the four illegally detained opposition figures, Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, Mehdi Karoubi, and Fatemeh Karoubi.

With the IRI having set a precedent for government sanctioned violence, oppression, and arbitrary detention, share your concerns about the safety of the Iranian people and of the detained opposition leaders. Send a letter urging world leaders 1) to call on the IRI to respect the right to freedom of expression, assembly, and association as set forth by international rights standards; 2) to urge the IRI to immediately halt its government sanctioned policy of oppression and brutality; 3) to call on the IRI to release all prisoners of conscience and protesters detained during rallies and immediately end the “enforced disappearances” of the four opposition leader; and 4) hold Iran's rights abusers accountable by blacklisting, freezing the assets of, and instituting travel bans on them.

  • Send an e-letter urging the safe release of Nasrin Sotoudeh!

    E-letter updated 01/12/11

    Special Note

We strongly encourage you all to send e-letters to Iranian officials, the High Commissioner on Human Rights and European countries demanding that they take immediate action to save the life of Nasrin Sotoudeh, an imprisoned human rights lawyer and the winner of Italy’s 2008 Human Rights International Award.

This United4Iran campaign, which demands that the Iranian government immediately release Sotoudeh, has been launched based on an emergency request from Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi. As a colleague of Nasrin Sotoudeh, Ms. Ebadi urges people worldwide to send these e-letters calling upon the High Commissioner for Human rights and their governments to work to save Nasrin's life.

On January 9, 2010 the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported that she was sentenced to 11 years prison and banned from practicing law or traveling for 20 years. The judge sentenced her to five years in prison on  charge of “acting against national security,” another five years for “not wearing hejab (Islamic dress) during a videotaped message,” and one year  for “propaganda against the regime.”

Stay updated on her case here: http://www.iranhumanrights.org/tag/nasrin-sotoudeh/

Background excerpted from Change for Equality

Nasrin Sotoudeh, the imprisoned human rights lawyer, has been on a dry hunger strike since Sunday October 31. According to reports her health is not good. According to reports by Radio Farda, Reza Khandan, Nasrin Sotoudeh’s husband has reported that his wife has gone on a dry hunger strike, refusing to drink even water or liquids, in protest to her situation in prison and lack of observance of her legal rights by officials of the Islamic Republic.

Sotoudeh was allowed a visit with her children, her sister and her mother-in-law on November 4, 2010. She informed her family members about her hunger strike during this visit. According to reports, Sotoudeh’s children were very upset and depressed after seeing their mother, who did not look well and who had lost a considerable amount of weight.

Her telephone contact with her family has been minimal since her arrest and she has been allowed only two visits with her family members since her detention, but has not been allowed to see her husband. Reza Khandan has been threatened by officials about conducting interviews with the press on the situation of his wife and has been warned not to publicize her situation. Sotoudeh is a colleague of Shirin Ebadi at the Defenders of Human Rights Center, and also served as one of Ebadi’s lawyers.

  • Send e-letters to Canadian officials & embassies urging them to save Canadian resident, Saeed Malekpour, from execution!

    E-letter last updated 02/14/11

    Background
Saeed Malekpour is a 35-year-old prisoner of conscience who was imprisoned in October of 2008 while visiting his terminally ill father in Iran, for case of  relating to “internet offenses.” The charges brought against Saeed include “Taking action against national security by designing and moderating adult content websites;” “Agitation against the regime;” “Contact with foreign entities;” “Insulting the sanctity of Islam;” and “Insulting the Supreme Leader and President.” He could be charged as “Corrupter of the Earth” (Mofsed fel-Arz), a charge that is punishable by the death sentence. Saeed continues to deny these vague allegations.

In 2004, Saeed and his wife moved to Canada, where he became a permanent resident. He began work as a freelance website developer & programmer responsible for developing only parts of websites or portions involving, for example, IT system management and system security. While working as developer in Canada, Saeed designed a program that would allow his clients to upload pictures, and as is a common courtesy in programming, included his name and info in the file.

This program, Saeed’s wife – Dr. Fatimeh Eftekhari – explains, was used in an adult content website WITHOUT Saeed’s knowledge or approval. “The only recognizable name in the program was Saeed’s,” she continued, “which led to his arrest” and to the accusations claiming that Saeed was responsible for the development and administration of the website.

In an open letter, Saeed described the physical and psychological tortures at the hands of the Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Cyber Army which pressured him to false confessions. Since his arrest, Saeed remains confined in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison without indictment or access to a lawyer. Saeed has spent more than 12 months in solitary confinement and denied books, newspapers, and contact with the outside world.

  • Send e-letters to IRI embassies, authorities, and UN officials urging an immediate halt to the practice of “internal exile”

Background adapted from Gender Equality for Iran

The human rights situation in Iran has reached an alarming stage. A large number of civil rights activists, political, ideological, religious and ethnic minority prisoners as well as journalists and women’s rights activists are either in prison or facing increased pressures at home. After the 2009 presidential elections, critics have been detained and issued heavy sentences ranging from execution to lashes to long prison terms. In an effort to increase pressure on prisoners and their families, the IRI often sends prisoners to other regions to serve prison terms in internal exile

This practice serves as a strategy to separate prisoners of conscience from one another. In some cases detainees are sent to regions where no one speaks their mother tongue. Sometimes prisoners are transferred without court rulings. The practice of internal exile has created overwhelming problems for the prisoners and their families.

Parents are often unable to physically or financially travel far to visit their children regularly. At present, many prisoners are transferred to the notorious Rajaishahr prison from Evin and 8 of them have received sentences of prison in internal exile. A large number of Kurdish and Turkish ethnic minority prisoners and Baha’i prisoners have been transferred to other areas.

Because this practice is in contradiction to Iranian laws, and a violation of international rights standards set forth by the United Nations, we encourage everyone to submit e-letters to various IRI embassies around the world, IRI officials inside Iran, and UN officials urging them to halt rights abuses, stop the practice of internal exile, and commute all internal exile sentences that have already been dealt.

  • Send e-letters highlighting the case of Rozita Vasseghi, jailed for her Baha'i faith

    Background
Rozita Vasseghi, is a Baha’i prisoner detained in a Mashhad prison who is, according to her sister, in poor health. Rozita was arrested in 2005 and imprisoned for nearly 27 days. Rozita’s seventy-year-old mother, who has witnessed the ongoing persecution of her family, bailed out her daughter by leveraging their home. Rozita was released from prison, and while awaiting her court hearing, endured several home invasions and episodes of property confiscation. Rozita was summoned, with several other members of the Baha’i community, in January 2010 to hear the court’s decision on their fates. Rozita received a 5 year prison term and banned from leaving Iran for 10 years. Despite an appeal, she was taken into custody again in March 2010. Detained in solitary confinement, her health is said to be deteriorating rapidly. The Baha'i community routinely faces systematic oppression and discrimination by the IRI, including denial of education and government jobs, home raids, arbitrary detention, cemetery desecration, and much more. We encourage all to send e-letters highlighting the case of Rozita.

  • Send e-Letters to IRI Officials & Embassies urging the release of the 7 Baha'i leaders

    Background
In early August 2010, after over two years of detention, Iran's 7 Baha'i leaders were sentenced to 20 years prison. Considering the advanced ages of several of these spiritual leaders, the IRI has effectively dealt life sentences. These two women and five men formed the national leadership of the Baha’i community in Iran, known as ‘yaran’ or ‘friends,' to tend to the spiritual needs of Iran's largest religious minority. The Baha'i community faces systematic oppression and discrimination by the IRI, including denial of education and government jobs, home raids, arbitrary detention, cemetery desecration, and much more.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 27, 2010: The 20 year prison sentences have been "halved" to 10 year prison sentences. Read more about this here: http://united4iran.org/2010/09/iran-halves-jail-terms-for-seven-bahai-followers/

  • Send an e-Letter to IRI Embassies urging the improvement of prison conditions and provision of adequate medical care

    Background
We encourage everyone to send e-letters to the embassies of the Islamic Republic of Iran in order to address the mental and physical state of the IRI’s prisoners of conscience; many of whom are subjected to gruesome prison conditions and denied medical treatment. Over a hundred post-election prisoners remain in Ward 350 of Evin prison. A number of prisoners are suffering serious health problems exacerbated by the atrocious prison conditions.

The IRI is targeting prisoners of conscience by forcing them to endure overcrowding, disease, unsanitary conditions, malnutrition, and low-quality food, all while restricting or refusing prisoners access to medical care. There have been several confirmed reports of rancid food, germ-ridden bedding, and arbitrarily-restricted access to medical care.

The IRI authorities are violating the country’s legal obligations by breaching the mandates set-forth in Article 10 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the IRI is signatory, that states “All persons deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person.”
