Thousands of women enter prison while pregnant. They often encounter substandard, if not life-threatening, medical care during their pregnancies and, in 35 states, are still subject to being shackled during labor and delivery.

We pledge to support efforts to end the shackling of pregnant and birthing women behind bars as well as all efforts to ensure that they receive essential health services for all pregnancy-related outcomes.

In states that still allow shackling, we support legislation that prohibits the use of shackling and other restraints on pregnant and laboring women. We also support initiatives that ensure the safety of pregnant girls and women in juvenile prisons, local jails, and detention centers.

We pledge to help mobilize when initiatives regarding safe pregnancies and births come up in our state and/or county.
