The Houston Food Policy Workgroup is a coalition of many different nonprofit organizations, public servants, farmers, growers, and others involved in the local food system.
For several years, the workgroup has worked to build a legislative agenda to provide the Texas legislature with an educational tool on ways to begin addressing food policy in a wholistic manner to improve the quality of life for all the people of the Houston region.
As the 2013 Legislative session moves into its second month, we are suggesting that members of the workgroup and the general public contact their representatives to help educate them on these shared values prepared by a broad coalition of Houstonians.

The mission of the Houston Food Policy Workgroup is to nurture the growth of a sustainable local food system, accessible to all, through education, collaboration, communication, and creation of a food policy council for the Houston region. Pursuant to our mission to nurture the growth of a sustainable local food system, we believe that the following issues should be considered by the Texas Legislature during the 2011 Legislative Session.
The people of the Houston region travel by many different modes for many different purposes, including walking, biking, automobiles, transit, and freight. All streets should be designed with the safety and ease of travel of all users in mind. This has not been done in many cases across the Houston region, but we can no longer suffer deficient infrastructure. All local governments should begin to incorporate Complete Streets design into all roadway projects to give a healthier, safer future to the people of the Houston region.
Many communities across the nation have adopted Complete Streets design standards. The Texas Department of Transportation recently incorporated Context Sensitive Solutions into their design manual and adopted a very recent policy of considering pedestrian and bicycle design in all road projects. Our local governments can too.
The National Complete Streets Coalition has ample resources to guide local governments in adopting these crucial policies:

A proposal to limit bike, pedestrian, and livability funding in the 2011 Transportation Improvement Program was tabled by the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Transportation Policy Council (TPC) on Friday, February 25, at a public meeting in the H-GAC building at 3555 Timmons on the 2nd floor in Conference Room A. Over 20 activists showed up to support allocating funding to green infrastructure and this petition was presented by Jay Blazek Crossley of Houston Tomorrow with 1,710 people signed on at the time.
For the original background story, please click here. For the update following the meeting, click here.
Please continue showing your support for investing in green infrastructure for the future of the Houston region's communities, economy, and ecology. The TPC will decide how to allocate these funds at their next several meetings, so we will continue to allow Houstonians to voice their support for walking, biking, transit, and livable infrastructure spending for the Houston region.
City of Houston Council Member Sue Lovell made the motion to table this proposal for a month, noting that all of the elected officials around the table should take the time to talk to their constituents about their priorities for regional transportation. Please ask your elected officials to hold town hall meetings to help conduct a truly regional conversation on the role of green infrastructure spending in Houston's future.
Also, we do not feel like we can change the text of this petition and continue to collect signatures along with the previous ones, so the only clarifying point added was that these feelings applied at the February 25 meeting and will continue to apply at future meetings.
