Americans and Credit Card Debt: Perspectives on the CREDIT CARD Act Three Years After Passage

June 28 2-3pm
2168 Rayburn House Office Building (Gold Room)
Washington, DC

Since passing Congress with bi-partisan support and being signed into law in 2009, the Credit CARD Act has helped millions of American households avoid costly fees and penalties on their credit cards, according to new research from Dēmos, a non-partisan, non-profit research and advocacy organization. Join us for a briefing to learn about the results of Dēmos’ 2012 survey of credit card-indebted households. We will hear diverse perspectives on credit card regulation from a representative of the card industry, consumer advocates, and a member of Congress. The newly-released data offers new insights into American households’ relationship with credit card debt in the aftermath of the Great Recession and credit crunch.

Speakers:
  • Representative Carolyn Maloney, original sponsor of the Credit CARD Act
  • Amy Traub, Senior Policy Analyst, Dēmos
  • Hilary O. Shelton, Washington Bureau Director and Senior Vice President for Advocacy, NAACP
  • Rick Fischer, Partner, Morrison Foerster
  • Ed Mierzwinski, Consumer Program Director, U.S. PIRG
