Tell the ASMFC to Stop the Overfishing of Menhaden

Atlantic menhaden is a critical forage species to our marine ecosystem. For 32 of the last 54 years, overfishing of this species has occurred. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission needs to act now to implement responsible management plans for this vital species.
Please click the following link to send a postcard to the ASMFC commissioners asking that the Menhaden Management Board:

  • Establish the first ever coast-wide cap on the Atlantic menhaden fishery for the 2012 season. The quota should be based the most conservative target of 40% MSP with a corresponding overfishing threshold of 15% MSP.
  • Require appropriate monitoring and enforcement measures to avoid fishing over that cap.
  • Move quickly to manage the species on an ecosystem basis, accounting for the  critical forage role that menhaden play.
  • With one simple click, you will be going a long way toward ensuring the absolutely crucial protection of our ocean's most necessary fish.
