On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, the Ugandan government declared its intention to ban 38 NGOs, accusing them of promoting LGBT rights in violation of the country’s law which criminalizes homosexuality. The ban, as well as a recent police raid of a training workshop of LGBTI rights activists sponsored by the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP), are the latest in a series of worrying actions taken by the Ugandan government and illustrate its determination to discriminate against vulnerable sections of the country's population. Moreover, these actions reflect a failure by the government to fulfill its obligation to respect, protect and promote the human rights of its citizens under the various international human rights conventions it has ratified.
