Sign Up to be a Medical Volunteer

You can make a difference and bring relief in Haiti

J/P HRO always welcomes medical volunteers. We specifically need nurses, physicians (ER docs, family practice, internal medicine and pediatrics), mid-level providers (Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants), radiologists and ultrasound technicians.

We have several different medical programs currently. The first is a hospital that is similar to an Emergency Department, but with a delivery room and the ability to admit patients for an overnight stay. We also have a Women's Clinic, staffed completely by Haitians, and mobile clinics for both inside and outside the IDP camp. Additionally, we have nurses assigned to our Rubble Removal Project in case of emergencies.

We have a staff of seven doctors and 20 nurses (all Haitian nationals) who cover our hospital 24/7 and work in our mobile clinics. In the hospital, we see 85% primary care complaints (including wound care and dehydration), 10% emergencies and 5% obstetrics. We have x-ray and ultrasound equipment (though the ultrasound machine requires doctors who can use the machine). We transfer all sick patients (including those needing emergent surgery) to other facilities. We work with a Haitian OB/GYN who provides back-up for deliveries (for those he doesn't attend) and also accepts our patients as transfer at the OB/GYN hospital.

Our preference is volunteers with training experience, as our focus is on training Haitian medical staff. The primary role of a medical volunteer is to support the Haitian medical staff, as this is a Haitian run facility. Our Haitian staff is eager to learn more and further their knowledge of up-to-date medicines and techniques. We ask that volunteers come prepared to teach, mentor, precept and partner with our Haitian staff. We would like to provide classes and workshops for our staff, so please come prepared to share your specialty or specific interest. Current topics of interest include dermatology and ultrasound techniques. Nurses should be prepared to teach techniques, even those as simple as aseptic technique or wound care.

Please be aware that we cook in a community style kitchen and often times cannot accommodate specific dietary needs. A vegetarian diet is generally possible but distinctly unexciting. Any needs beyond this are probably not feasible. You can buy a certain amount of your own food here, but this cannot be relied upon and it is extremely expensive. If you think that this will be a problem for you, please consider carefully before applying.

Thank you for your interest in partnering with J/P HRO.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with J/P HRO! We are fortunate to receive a high number of volunteer applications but are unfortunately not able to respond to each one individually.

Please do NOT book your flights until you have been formally accepted. At that time we will send you an official travel form so that we can arrange your pick up at the airport.
