We have exciting news to share; Congress is poised to take a meaningful step to protect you and your family from toxic chemicals. We need your help to make sure your Senators know that fixing the toxic chemicals law is important to American families!
Just as we have laws against people breaking into our homes and threatening our safety, we need laws against chemical intruders that enter our bodies.
Without our knowledge or consent, these toxic intruders put us and our children at risk. Science is linking toxic chemical exposure to all kinds of serious diseases and disorders, including childhood leukemia and brain cancers, breast and testicular cancer, neurological disorders like autism and Alzheimer's, and fertility problems.
We need you to ask your Senators to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation. By signing up as a co-sponsor, your Senators can show their commitment to putting common sense limits on toxic chemicals.
Will you take a minute and ask your Senators to be superheroes by co-sponsoring the Safe Chemicals Act?
If you prefer to make a two-minute phone call to your Senators, please call the Capitol switchboard at: (202) 224-3121. If you need some tips before calling, read this message from Lindsay Dahl, the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families Deputy Director.

Do you agree that if we can have laws against people breaking into our homes and threatening our safety, we can have laws against chemical intruders that enter our homes without our knowledge and cause birth defects, breast and testicular cancer, or damage to our developing children?
We do. And that’s why this campaign is not taking a post-election break, but is gearing up to get more co-sponsors for legislation to protect families from toxic chemicals that harm our health and the environment.
Will you please be part of our final push to urge House Members to co-sponsor the strong Toxic Chemical Safety Act (HR 5820)?
The strength of this campaign is not derived from who controls Congress. It’s derived from the overwhelming public support for reducing the impact of chemicals on human health and the environment. That public support has already flexed its muscle in the marketplace, led by very informed consumers like yourselves and by significant policy changes at the state and local level. Because of our strength, the chemical industry has had a hard time controlling these forces in the same way they can control policy-making in Washington.
We need your help to create a final surge in this Congress. Please ask your Member of Congress to co-sponsor the Toxic Chemical Safety Act (HR 5820).

Breast cancer, prostate cancer, learning disabilities, diabetes. All of these diseases have been linked to toxic chemicals in everyday products. Even low doses of some chemicals, like BPA that leaches from plastic baby bottles and cash register receipts, can mess up the hormones in our bodies.
A new law has been proposed to require the chemical industry to prove their chemicals are safe. Why has Congress failed to act? Because chemical industry lobbyists told them to place corporate profits first, before your family’s health!
It’s time to send a message to Congress. There are three great ways to express your concern: (1) Ask your current Congress member to co-sponsor the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act, HR 5820, (2) Send a message to the candidates running to represent you next year in the U.S. House of Representatives asking them to endorse the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act or (3) Thank the current co-sponsors of the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act.
Ask them whose side are they on - the chemical industry or healthy babies?

Good news! State governments have been taking the initiative to pass laws to protect public health from toxic chemicals found in everyday products. Leadership by the states has primed Congress and the chemical industry to call for reform of our national chemical laws, and the time has come to act! Legislation to overhaul the nation’s failed and outdated chemical law has been introduced in Congress by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Congressmen Bobby Rush (D-IL) and Henry Waxman (D-CA).
The federal government is finally beginning to understand what the states have known for a long time: there needs to be stronger oversight of ubiquitous toxic chemicals that have a daily, persistent effect on our families and children.

We need to show our representatives that there is wide spread support for overhauling the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). But right now the new bill, the Safe Chemical Act of 2010, would allow hundreds of new chemicals to enter the market and be used in consumer products for many years without first requiring them to be proven safe. It also makes it too hard to get known dangerous chemicals off the market.
With your help we’re confident it can be fixed. Please send Congress an email today and also let your friends and family know about this once-in-a–generation opportunity.
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has demonstrated leadership and made a commitment to reforming the main federal chemical safety law – the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) – which is badly broken. Her strong statements about the importance of protecting people and the environment from unsafe chemicals are encouraging signs that substantial reform is possible.
However, we must ensure this reform meets the needs of people. Right now legislation is being drafted in Congress to reform TSCA. It is critical that EPA support the strongest version of this legislation, one that includes taking swift action on chemicals we already know to be dangerous.
The best and fastest way to protect people from dangerous chemicals is to reduce or eliminate exposure to them. Real TSCA reform will ensure that people and the environment are protected by taking swift action on the worst chemicals – those that we already know are unsafe, and that are present in our bodies and in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. But this is not an approach that EPA has publicly supported yet.
We need you to take action today, to help put EPA on the right path for protecting our kids and our families. Let your voice be heard supporting strong reform in Washington!
Please read the letter below and then enter your information and click submit to send your email to Administrator Jackson.

The Safe Chemicals Act is landmark legislation that will overhaul the way the government protects people from toxic chemicals.
The Safe Chemicals Act puts our health first, provides better information to businesses, and helps the average consumer avoid toxic chemicals in every day products.
“The Safe Chemicals Act goes a long way toward bringing chemical policy into the 21st century.”

On March 8th Washington states Senate concurred with the House and passed The Safe
Baby Bottle Act and it is on it’s way to the governor's desk to be signed into law.
Washington will join the growing list of states eliminating BPA from children's products and sports bottles! How is that for exciting?
Thanks to your urging, the bill passed with wide margins of victory (95-1 in the House!) Legislators stood up for children’s health instead of the chemical industry's special interests and voted “yes” on The Safe Baby Bottle Act. We need to thank them for a job well done! Send an email to your legislators by typing your zip code below so that we can match you to the correct district.
If one or more of your legislators did not vote for the bill a thank you email will not be sent to them.
With your help, we can send hundreds of messages to Senators urging them to stand up for Washington families, and vote “yes” for the Safe Baby Bottle Act.
Seattle mom Molly Gray found out that while she was pregnant she had toxic mercury and many other chemicals in her body.
Like any mom, Molly was shocked and angry but, she also was ready to put up a fight. A few weeks ago, Molly flew to Washington, D.C. and testified before a Senate committee to urge Congress to take immediate action on the most harmful chemicals, including chemicals like mercury found in her body while she was pregnant.
Molly’s testimony was inspiring (link), but one voice is not enough! If we all stand with Molly we can give our leaders the courage they need to stand up to the powerful chemical industry and put children’s health first.
Here is how you can help right now: Send an email to your members of Congress letting them know you stand with Seattle mom, Molly Gray, and want them to take immediate action to phase out the worst of the worst chemicals, otherwise known as persistent toxic chemicals or PBTs.

One way we’ll know that Congress is serious about reforming the nation’s chemical laws is by how they address a group of extremely dangerous chemicals that are the equivalent of the FBI’s “most wanted:” Persistent, Bioaccumulative Toxins or PBTs. Some of the most notorious chemicals ever studied are PBTs- lead, PCBs, DDT, dioxin mercury, and cadmium. Many PBTs, including flame retardants and the stain-resistant perfluorinated chemicals, are still found in products we use every day in our homes and places of work.
Safer States believes it should be a no-brainer for Congress to put PBTs on a pathway to phase out when it reforms the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Unfortunately, even no-brainer ideas have run into trouble recently where major lobbying has been done by the chemical industry.
Most disturbing is that people are exposed to many of these PBT chemicals as a result of their use in everyday consumer products.
We need you to take action now to be sure Congress includes a PBT phaseout in upcoming legislation to reform TSCA.
