Ask Congress to Support the Safe Chemical Act
We need to show our representatives that there is wide spread support for overhauling the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). But right now the new bill, the Safe Chemical Act of 2010, would allow hundreds of new chemicals to enter the market and be used in consumer products for many years without first requiring them to be proven safe. It also makes it too hard to get known dangerous chemicals off the market.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has demonstrated leadership and made a commitment to reforming the main federal chemical safety law – the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) – which is badly broken. Her strong statements about the importance of protecting people and the environment from unsafe chemicals are encouraging signs that substantial reform is possible.However, we must ensure this reform meets the needs of people. Right now legislation is being drafted in Congress to reform TSCA. It is critical that EPA support the strongest version of this legislation, one that includes taking swift action on chemicals we already know to be dangerous.
The best and fastest way to protect people from dangerous chemicals is to reduce or eliminate exposure to them. Real TSCA reform will ensure that people and the environment are protected by taking swift action on the worst chemicals – those that we already know are unsafe, and that are present in our bodies and in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. But this is not an approach that EPA has publicly supported yet.

On March 8th Washington states Senate concurred with the House and passed The Safe
Baby Bottle Act and it is on it’s way to the governor's desk to be signed into law.
Washington will join the growing list of states eliminating BPA from children's products and sports bottles! How is that for exciting?

Legislators stood up for children’s health instead of the chemical industry's special interests and voted “yes” on The Safe Baby Bottle Act. We need to thank them for a job well done! Stand with Molly and tell Congress to take action on the worst toxic chemicals
Seattle mom Molly Gray found out that while she was pregnant she had toxic mercury and many other chemicals in her body.
Like any mom, Molly was shocked and angry but, she also was ready to put up a fight. A few weeks ago, Molly flew to Washington, D.C. and testified before a Senate committee to urge Congress to take immediate action on the most harmful chemicals, including chemicals like mercury found in her body while she was pregnant.

Tell Congress to take action on the “Most Wanted” of toxic chemicals
One way we’ll know that Congress is serious about reforming the nation’s chemical laws is by how they address a group of extremely dangerous chemicals that are the equivalent of the FBI’s “most wanted:” Persistent, Bioaccumulative Toxins or PBTs. Some of the most notorious chemicals ever studied are PBTs- lead, PCBs, DDT, dioxin mercury, and cadmium. Many PBTs, including flame retardants and the stain-resistant perfluorinated chemicals, are still found in products we use every day in our homes and places of work.Safer States believes it should be a no-brainer for Congress to put PBTs on a pathway to phase out when it reforms the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Unfortunately, even no-brainer ideas have run into trouble recently where major lobbying has been done by the chemical industry.
Most disturbing is that people are exposed to many of these PBT chemicals as a result of their use in everyday consumer products.
