Protect Public Lands

Protection of America’s treasures should come before Congress granting the authority for narrowed business interests to mine and pillage our nation’s lands with boom and bust schemes that only offer marginal and short term economic gain while threatening our air and water quality. This is not sensible development; it is the destruction of America’s few remaining monuments, our public lands.

We call on the United States Congress to support America’s public lands and to say no to H.R. 1581, the Roadless Area Release Act. This legislation would remove needed protections from over 40 million acres of land and open it to development, drilling and other speculative ventures that often have a boom and bust outcome and threaten our air and water quality. The bill is set for a committee hearing on July 26th. That is next week!

Retired Brigadier General Steven Anderson had this to say about America’s public lands: “On a recent trip to the Mojave I was reminded of the beauty and glory of the desert. Millions of Americans visit public lands like this each year. It disturbs me deeply that these beautiful lands, America's treasure, could potentially be harmed by speculative operations such as drilling and mining. Protection of our public lands is patriotic and the right thing to do. Congress needs to understand that once we have lost them, they are gone forever.”

These are strong words from a great leader who clearly understands the stakes involved in this fight. The argument here is clear, protect our children’s heritage or allow irresponsible and unwise development of America’s treasures. Once it’s gone,
it’s gone forever.
