 I have been working to fight against fraud and corruption in the federal government for more than 30 years, through journalism, books and lawsuits. Writing the "Solutions" column for Truthout has been the best experience I have had in journalism to truly expose and reform the system.
Because of my expertise in the area of national defense, I wrote 39 columns this past year on the problems afflicting the Pentagon. The column on the pricing of weapons caught the interest of DoD Director of Weapons Pricing, Shay Assad. He agreed to an interview to tell me how he is planning to introduce an effective but revolutionary pricing reform as outlined in my column. This reform, if implemented, could save literally billions of dollars. I also recently met with Mr. Assad in the Pentagon for an hour to hear him out and suggest several ways to implement this important reform - I’m now writing him a memo for a test program of this method to reform the Pentagon procurement system.
In the “Solutions: Making Government Work” column, I'm pleased to not only be doing exposes and writing “ain’t it awful” stories, but also exploring how to realistically solve the problems. It has been hard work - I’ve needed to draw from my experience and the experience of my many sources inside the federal government to figure out how to change it. Exposing government malfeasance is hard, but determining realistic solutions is even harder in the polarized Washington atmosphere.
Truthout was the one media outlet that I believe would let me do this type of column. Instead of the dogmatic political rhetoric that plagues much of the other Internet websites, I'm able to write longer, reasoned columns with solutions that rise above the political rancor.
