Dear Truthout Reader,
As you know, one of Truthout's key goals is to dispel myths.
As part of its expanding coverage, I'm starting a series that explores the dark underside of US policies toward Mexico, beginning with a look at the construction of a physical wall on the border between the two countries:
Using the lower Rio Grande Valley Brownsville, Texas, area as a point of departure, I will report on the motivations, objectives and destructive results of the United States' actions in relation to its southern neighbor, and on the reverberations that are subsequently felt throughout Central and South America.
When it comes to Mexico border policy, very little is what it appears to be. The degree to which global corporations, demand for cheap labor, racial attitudes and the desire for US military hegemony are among the guiding underlying principals for that policy often remains unexposed behind sensational initiatives such as the so-called "war on drugs."
There are also some bright spots of hope regarding this issue that I will share with you along the way.
Your readership and continued financial support make possible reporting such as the "Truthout on the Mexican Border" series. I hope that you will enjoy the series and be enlightened by these articles, and I look forward to your feedback.
