California Gay Marriage Case Headed to US Supreme Court
Maura Dolan, The Los Angeles Times: "The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals' decision to deny an appeal of February's ruling against Proposition 8 paves the way for a U.S. Supreme Court decision on gay marriage by next year. The decision means the U.S. Supreme Court is likely to have two major gay-rights cases on its docket in the near future. Another federal appeals court last week struck down a federal law that denied federal recognition to same-sex marriage."

Confidant Contradicts Walker, Claims Governor Is Not Cooperating With Corruption Investigation
Annie-Rose Strasser, ThinkProgress: "Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) has been guarded, to say the least, about a corruption investigation going on in Wisconsin of which he may or may not be a part. He has transferred money from his campaign into his legal defense fund, but simultaneously insists that he has no need - as of yet– for that fund."

Activists Call for Firing of Federal Housing Finance Agency Head Over Role in Foreclosure Crisis
Jordan Estevao, Truthout: "During the week of May 20, 1,000 families facing foreclosure, clergy and community leaders from across the country did what President Obama should have done months ago: deliver a pink slip to Ed DeMarco, acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). They traveled to Washington, DC, boarded buses and flooded the lobby of the FHFA to fire the man who is single-handedly prolonging the foreclosure crisis and standing in the way of economic recovery."

Norman Solomon Fights for Primary Win in California
Paul Jay, The Real News: "One of the interesting features of this primary season as the US heads towards its elections in November is a phenomenon of independent progressive Democrats running within the Democratic Party, some of whom are mostly critical of the Obama administration but nevertheless are running for a seat in the House on behalf of the Democratic Party. One of those races is in California just above San Francisco, where Norman Solomon is running. And his race is drawing a lot of national attention."

Michael Winship | On Climate Change, Money Trumps Common Sense
Michael Winship, Moyers & Co.: "These days, it seems as if there's not a fact that can't be ignored, rejected or altered if you throw enough cash at it. Last week, the Associated Press reported 'a troubling new milestone.' In the Arctic, levels of the heat-trapping gas, carbon dioxide, a key factor in global warming, have hit 400 parts per million, a level scientists believe has not been reached in at least 800,000 years."

A Mexican Spring Begins to Blossom
Marta Molina, Waging Nonviolence: "In Mexico City's daily life - in the shops, taxicabs, cafes and lines waiting for the bus - one could hear conversations between people of all ages saying that Enrique Pena Nieto would, without a doubt, win the presidential elections. 'Either something huge will happen,' a taxi driver told me, 'or he will win.' And when people referred to 'something huge happening,' they were referring to violence, or some unbearable crisis."

Praying at the Church of St. Drone: The President and His Apostles
Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch: "Be assured of one thing: whichever candidate you choose at the polls in November, you aren't just electing a president of the United States; you are also electing an assassin-in-chief. The last two presidents may not have been emperors or kings, but they - and the vast national-security structure that continues to be built-up and institutionalized around the presidential self - are certainly one of the nightmares the founding fathers of this country warned us against. They are one of the reasons those founders put significant war powers in the hands of Congress, which they knew would be a slow, recalcitrant, deliberative body."
