Tell President Obama: Present a Clean Budget to Congress

End bans on abortion coverage in the 2014 federal budget. Restore Medicaid funding. Restore dignity.

Every year politicians use the budget process to deny abortion coverage for women enrolled in any federal insurance plan. This includes: everyone eligible for Medicaid, Medicare beneficiaries, Federal employees and their dependents, Peace Corps volunteers, Native Americans receiving health care through Indian Health Services, women incarcerated in federal prisons and detention centers, military servicemembers and their dependents, and low-income women in the District of Columbia.

It doesn't have to be this way.

President Obama can present a clean budget to Congress, free of discriminatory restrictions. He can take this opportunity to remove barriers to abortion access so that all women may live their lives with dignity.

Dear President Obama,

I know that you support a woman's right to choose abortion—regardless of her ability to pay. As you know, that is an important reason why women voted overwhelmingly to return you to office for a second term.

I, too, believe that every woman should have the ability to make her own decision about bringing a child into the world, regardless of income. And I want to live in a nation where every woman's life matters.

That is why I am asking you to end bans on abortion funding that harm women and increase gender inequality. President Obama, please present a clean budget to Congress this year.

Despite the fact that one in three women will have an abortion in her lifetime, every year the budget process is manipulated to deny abortion coverage for those enrolled in any federal insurance plan. This means that those eligible for Medicaid, Medicare beneficiaries, Federal employees and their dependents, Peace Corps volunteers, Native Americans receiving health care through Indian Health Services, people in federal prisons and detention centers, military servicemembers and their dependents, and low-income women in the District of Columbia are all denied full pregnancy care coverage.

It doesn't have to be this way. President Obama, you can present a budget free of discriminatory abortion funding restrictions. A budget is a moral document that reflects our values. As you said in your second inauguration speech, any one of us may face a crisis. Low-income women should not be singled out for punishment by withholding the safety net.

When you submit your 2014 budget to Congress this year, deliver on your promise to the women who came out in force to support you, and strike abortion funding restrictions from the budget. Aim high. Fight for the women who fought for you.

I believe that all women deserve to take care of themselves and their families and I know that you do too.

It's a matter of economic justice and fairness.
