Dear Supporter,
|
These are exciting times for domestic workers as we work together with others to build a vibrant movement for social and global justice:
On September 21, domestic workers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Washington DC mobilized in support of ADAPT's actions to stop the cuts to Medicaid and protect the civil rights of people with disabilities.
Last week, NDWA returned to the city where we were founded, Atlanta, with the We Belong Together women's delegation to expose the impacts of anti-immigrant legislation on women and their families.
This week, NDWA Director Ai-jen Poo will address the Take Back the American Dream conference in Washington, DC, domestic workers will join the Community/Labor March to Wall Street to support the Occupy Wall Street movement, and we will prepare for a week of action for "Jobs, Not Cuts!" with a phone conference TODAY at 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific, which we invite you to join.

We Belong Together
|
On September 28 and 29, NDWA returned to the city where we were founded. We went back to Atlanta with the We Belong Together delegation of twenty-five women leaders from human rights organizations around the country to expose the impacts of HB 87, a copycat version of Arizona's SB 1070, on women and their families, and to bring their voices and experiences back to our communities and to the women's and immigrant rights movements.

The We Belong Together delegation heard testimony from numerous women about how Georgia's new HB 87 law has affected them and their families. The stories of these courageous women were extremely moving, heartbreaking, and inspiring, as they told not only of the abuses they have suffered but also of finding the strength to speak up for themselves, their families and their communities. The Delegation released a statement at a press conference the following morning. Read the full statement at webelongtogether.org.
Caring Across Generations to Protect What We Have
On September 21, domestic workers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Washington DC mobilized in support of actions organized by one of our key campaign partners, ADAPT, a disability rights group. Throughout the country, actions were held to stop the cuts to Medicaid and demand key reforms to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities.
This action marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to mount pressure on Congress to stop cuts to our safety net. NDWA has joined our campaign partners, including CCC, PICO, SEIU, Community Catalyst, NPA, HCAN, and AJS to target the Super Committee, a small bi-partisan committee of Congress members, tasked with cutting $1.5 trillion from our budget by the end of the year. Specifically, we are organizing "Jobs, Not Cuts!" events during the national week of action on October 10-14th with the following united demands:
- Job creation not deficit reduction should be the country’s priority,
- Significant new revenue from corporations and wealthy individuals is necessary to balance the budget,
- Medicare and Medicaid should not be cut in any way that pushes costs onto states or beneficiaries, or reduces their access to care
- Social Security should be off the table as part of the deficit negotiations
We must continue to demand that corporations and the rich pay their fair share and create revenue so the budget is not balanced on the backs of working and poor people.
|
Please join us on a national call to get oriented on the "Jobs, Not Cuts!" events during the National Week of action on Oct. 10-14th. The call is on Tuesday, October 4 at 8:00pm EST/5:00pm PST, 888.577.0004, code 3100#
