Dear Supporter,

As the nation marked Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, NDWA was thrilled to witness Octavia Spencer be recognized as Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globe Awards. Ms. Spencer was recognized for her performance in the acclaimed film The Help, which has helped draw attention to the stories and struggles of domestic workers. Here’s what Octavia said as she accepted the award:

"With regard to domestics in this country, now and then, I think Dr. King said it best: 'All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.' And I thank you for recognizing that with our film."

Octavia continued her insightful comments behind the scenes, telling CNN that though her performance and the other characters in the film are fictional, "they represent scores of real people.... The narrative itself is part of our fabric," she said.

NDWA works round-the-clock to win recognition, respect and protections for domestic workers all across the globe. Octavia’s words are helping to carry that work even further and our hat is off to her and all the actors in the film. Our public appreciation to Octavia made headlines of its own from Reuters to The Grio to the Los Angeles Times and more and we are so honored that Octavia saw some of this coverage. She even posted to her Facebook fans about it.

Like Octavia, you are our family and together we can #BeTheHelp for domestic workers everywhere.

It takes a village to make a change. #BeTheHelp www.domesticworkers.org

Thank you for your support of NDWA,
