Dear Supporter, This spring, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about my movement heroes — the people whose contributions have inspired me to work side by side with all of you to win dignity, respect, and labor rights for domestic workers here in the United States.
They are the thousands of ordinary Americans whose non-violent direct action ignited the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Suffrage Movement, and the movement to end the Vietnam War. Our history is filled with powerful examples of ordinary — and heroic — Americans coming together to use nonviolent direct action to win social change. Our own movement to win dignity, respect, and labor protections for domestic workers stands on their foundations. And so I’m excited that this April and May, a year after The Arab Spring brought millions of people in the Middle East to the streets to demand change, hundreds of thousands of us will recall our nation’s vibrant movement history and come together for The 99% Spring. The 99% Spring is a new, broad-based movement to use nonviolent direct action to transform our country and reclaim our democracy. Find out more about this exciting movement and sign up for a training here. The 99% Spring renews our nation’s dynamic and successful history of nonviolent direct action to unite domestic workers, parents, children, seniors, caregivers, people with disabilities, workers, students — each and every one of us — in a groundswell of support for realizing a new way of doing things in our country. At a time when the big banks are foreclosing on hundreds of thousands of homes, leaving millions of Americans without a place to raise their children or care for their aging parents, and when domestic workers continue to labor without basic wage protections, it’s clear that this crisis hurts all of us and that we must act together to build a better world. This crisis demands that we come together in a spirit of hope and love to remake our country into one that values all work and all workers, respecting our human rights and treating each and every one of us with dignity and respect. Will you join us as we stand with people from across the country to create a new way of doing things in our communities, our corporations, and our government? This week, the 99% Spring will be training 100,000 people in non-violent direct action in more than 900 cities across the country. Volunteer to host a training or sign up for a training near you.
