Who Needs Family Planning?
The current legislative session has kept the Family Planning Association of Maine and our supporters incredibly busy -- communicating with our legislators about bills and budget decisions that will limit access to reproductive health care and reproductive rights for Maine's women, men, and teens.
In the course of this work, we get to hear some pretty powerful testimony and read some amazing letters.
We're thinking that these deserve a wider audience, so from time to time, we'll share them with you.
Here's a letter that a family planning supporter recently wrote to members of the Appropriations Committee, urging them to restore the Maine family planning allocation from the Fund for a Healthy Maine.
As a woman and a Mainer, I have relied on family planning for years to supply safe, effective, and affordable preventative health care and family planning services. Though my husband and I have always been hard workers, the economy and our desire to attend school to build opportunities for our family's future have often meant that times are tight.
Maine's Family Planning Centers have been absolutely crucial to ensuring that our family is still able to receive quality health care services. I don't know where we'd have been without them -- certainly we would not have been able to access preventative care and affordable birth control (without family planning, I was paying almost $50 a month -- out of pocket -- for birth control!).
Access to affordable care and family planning is a key part of overall health -- and therefore deserves a place in the Fund for a Healthy Maine budget. Please restore family planning services to the fund. Mainers are counting on this support -- and I'm one of them.
There you have it. Just one example of who needs family planning in Maine!
