Tell President Obama to Stand Strong for Students
It's time to speak out and stand up for a new rule that would shield students from the very worst programs at for-profit colleges.
Just as everyday Americans suffered the effects of misplaced priorities and weak regulation of subprime lenders, so too are the most vulnerable in our country being harmed by high-cost, low-return educational programs at for-profit college companies. The U.S. Department of Education's proposed "gainful employment" regulations aim to protect students from these educational pathways to nowhere – the fatally flawed programs that leave more than 65 percent of their students unable to pay off their loan debts, while continuing to yield billions for their shareholders. The proposed rule accounts for the worst of the worst: Estimates show that only about 5 percent of all career-prep certificate and degree programs would be forced to clean house or shut down. But that hasn’t stopped for-profit college companies from mounting a multi-billion dollar lobbying and PR campaign, claiming that regulation will hurt non-traditional students by limiting their educational choice. But the truth is that – just like subprime mortgages – these so-called "choices" are toxic options, amounting to the equivalent of educational malpractice.
