Help Utah's Wild Horse Herd in Frisco HMA - BLM Proposes October Roundup and "Management Plan" for Next 10-20 Years

Deadline for public comments: September 5, 2012.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comments on a Herd Area Management Plan (HMAP) for the Frisco Herd Management Area (HMA) in Utah. The plan will determine the fate of the Frisco wild horses for the next 10-20 years. The BLM has produced one Environmental Assessment (EA) to examine the impacts of the HMAP and a proposed helicopter roundup, to be conducted in October 2012, to remove 104-170 wild horses from the HMA.

Although the EA outlines a number of alternative actions, none are good for the wild horse herd. The BLM must increase the "Allowable Management Level" (AML) for the Frisco HMA. Currently, the AML for the 60,000-acre Frisco HMA is just 12 to 60 horses, a population level that is too low to protect the genetic health of the herd. The BLM must also forgo the removal of wild horses, and manage the Frisco wild horse population on the range in a humane manner that respects and fosters the natural behavior of wild horse herds.
