Let's take this to the White House

On December 5, the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC) formally requested a meeting at the White House. Now we need your help to make sure the White House comes through.

The White House's website says that President Obama is "committed to making this the most open and participatory Administration in history." We haven't found that to be true in our dealing with the Obama Administration's Department of the Interior and Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

For example, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has refused to respond to a letter signed by 25,130 Americans. And despite receiving over 200,000 public comments against wild horse roundups in 2012, the BLM is implementing a policy to ignore form letters sent in by citizens.

A meeting at the White House will allow us to address these issues face to face with the President's staff and begin to open the constructive lines of communication that we've been seeking to build with his Administration.

Your Letter:

Dear President Obama - You promised that your Administration would be the "most open and participatory Administration in history." But citizens concerned about the federal government's wild horse program have routinely been discounted and ignored by your Interior Secretary and his Department of the Interior and Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
 
For example, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar hasn't even responded to a letter signed by 25,130 Americans expressing outrage that the BLM, which he oversees, looked the other way while 1,700 wild horses were sold to a known kill buyer who ships horses to Mexico for slaughter.
 
Even your White House responds to petitions signed by 25,000 or more people. Why should your Interior Secretary be held to a different standard?
 
Sadly, this is in line with our other experiences dealing with the BLM.
 
After receiving 200,000 public comments against wild horse roundups this year alone, the BLM is implementing a policy to ignore form letters sent in by citizens. This discounts the individual voices of the tens of thousands of citizens who send letters through website to provide their comments on the BLM's proposed actions.
 
On December 5, the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC) has submitted a formal meeting request with your staff to discuss these and other difficulties that wild horse advocates like me are experiencing in an attempt to have an honest dialogue with your Administration about the BLM's wild horse program. I encourage you to direct your staff to accept this request and sit down face to face with AWHPC representatives.
 
I look forward to the White House's response and to hearing more about how your Administration intends to work with AWHPC to open up the constructive lines of communication that I, and many other Americans, have been seeking.
