BLM Makes Plans to Remove Hundreds of Mustangs in Wyoming

Send In Your Comments Opposing Unnecessary Roundup - Act Today!

The Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is requesting public comments on the proposed "Red Desert Complex Wild Horse Gather" in Wyoming. Although portrayed as a Catch, Treat and Release (CTR) operation in which mares will be inoculated with a fertility control vaccine and horses will be released, the proposed action will actually remove 500-650 horses living within and outside this complex in Wyoming's pristine Red Desert region -- including young foals.

Please get your comments in today to urge BLM to incorporate alternatives for leaving all horses on the range into its final plan for the capture operation. Last year, BLM removed more than 2,000 wild horses from another area of Wyoming's Red Desert. Mustang populations in this Complex area are already dangerously low, and BLM does not need to add any more horses to government holding facilities where 42,000 mustangs are already stockpiled at taxpayer expense.

Congress Still Working on 2011 & 2012 Budgets

Please Meet with Your Senators' Local Offices To Help Wild Horses and Burros

Last Friday, Congress passed its sixth stopgap spending bill for fiscal year 2011 which ends on September 30. This resolution authorizes continued federal spending at 2010 levels until April 8, 2011, while Congress debates a longer-term funding bill.

This means that we have only three weeks to convince the Senate to follow the House's lead and deny the Interior Department's request to increase the BLM wild horse and burro management budget for 2011. As long as it does not receive a budget increase, the BLM will be unable roundup an additional 4,400 more mustangs targeted for removal this fiscal year.

The BLM is accepting public comments through March 30, 2011 on its “Proposed Strategy for Future Management of Wild Horses and Burros.” Unfortunately, despite promises of change, the agency still intends to remove 32,800 mustangs from the range over the next four years. Nevada's Anti-Mustang Resolution SJR5

This week, award-winning investigative journalist George Knapp wrote a eye-opening article exposing the commercial (livestock) interests behind the Nevada Senate Joint Resolution (SJR5). This non-binding resolution opposes wild horse preserves and efforts to expand wild horse habitat in the state. If passed, SJR5 will be bad for Nevada, bad for America's wild horses, and will send a terrible message to Congress from the state with the largest wild horse population in the country.

ATTENTION NEVADA RESIDENTS! If you live in Nevada please take a minute to fill out the Nevada Legislature's public opinion poll on SJR5. Instructions:
