Please Submit Comments on BLM Plan to Remove Wild Horses from McCullough Peaks HMA in Wyoming

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is asking the public to provide comments on issues and information that should be included in an Environmental Assessment for a plan to remove wild horses from the McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area (HMA) in Wyoming. Although AWHPC supports the BLM's plan to manage this herd with PZP fertility control and to use bait trapping as an alternative to traumatic helicopter roundups, we do not believe that any horses should be removed from this HMA while livestock grazing continues.

Please submit comments to help us convince the BLM to forgo the removal of any mustangs and increase the number of wild horses allowed to live in this popular HMA, which is just 70 miles east of Yellowstone National Park. Please take action by clicking here or below.

Two Years After Rescue, A Rare Happy Ending for Captured Nevada Wild Horses

In June 2010, the BLM rounded up 175 wild horses who had been living on a private ranch in northeastern Nevada. More than half of the horses were wild mustangs who had travelled out of a federally-designated Herd Area and onto the ranch in search of food and water. Classifying the horses as "estray" instead of federally-protected, the BLM turned them over to the Nevada Department of Agriculture, which in turn, disposed of them at the Fallon Livestock Auction where they could be sold for slaughter.

Thereafter ensued one of the largest wild horse rescues in history, in which a group of wild horse advocates, backed by a California philanthropist and winemaker, rescued 170 horses from the cruelest of fates. Nearly two years to the day after they were captured, the horses were released last month to a 2,000-acre ranch in northern California. Journalist Andrew Cohen Continues to Expose Ranchers' War on Wild Horses in The Atlantic

Noted journalist and CBS legal analyst Andrew Cohen's latest piece in The Atlantic covers the legal action filed by AWHPC, The Cloud Foundation and the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs to defend Wyoming's wild horses against an attack by the nation's largest livestock grazing association. In the must-read piece, Cohen exposes the greed of western ranchers, who press for elimination of wild horses from public lands while profiting from grazing their livestock on those same public lands at taxpayer-subsidized rates. Cohen's piece delivers a blow to the public lands ranching industry, which is destroying vast swaths of public lands in the American West while driving America's cherished wild horse and burro herds off their homes on the range.
