Letter to Brigadier General Peter DeLuca
Subject: The DRBC Must Do an Environmental Impact Study
Your Letter:
Dear General DeLuca: I strongly urge the DRBC to conduct common sense and legally required environmental studies before moving any further to finalize regulations that would allow and govern shale gas production using high-volume hydraulic fracturing combined with horizontal drilling within the Basin’s area. Recent studies and exposes have documented water contamination , air pollution, and other health and quality of life issues as a result of shale gas production. As federal representatives of states within the Delaware River Basin, I believe it is vitally important that all steps are taken to protect the drinking water of the 15 million people who rely on it and its rich and sensitive ecological system. The family of federal agencies that you represent on the Commission, including the DRBC, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Park Service, have all acknowledged that proposed shale gas development involving "fracking" and other techniques would risk significant environmental harm. Please make sure that the Commission meets its obligation under these agencies’ National Environmental Policy Acts to do an environmental impact review. Thank you for your consideration.
