The Activist(s), a new "silent film" about Occupy Entergy in New Orleans

Beyond Nuclear has just released The Activist(s), a new "silent film" about the "Occupy Entergy" non-violent civil disobedience action in New Orleans last week. Check out Beyond Nuclear's home page entries dating back to March 22nd for more reports on, and photos of, actions in Vermont and across the country in protest against Entergy's 20 year license extension at Vermont Yankee, a Fukushima Daiichi twin General Electric Mark I boiling water reactor.

NRC violates its own environmental protection mandate, rejects consideration of renewables alternative to 20 year extension at Davis-Besse

The five U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners (NRC) marked the 33rd annual commemoration of the Three Mile Island meltdown by violating the National Environmental Policy Act. They voted unanimously to overrule their own Atomic Safety (sic) and Licensing Board, which last April 22nd (the 25th annual commemoration of the Chernobyl Nuclear Catastrophe) had admitted an environmental coalition's contention that wind and solar power could readily replace the Davis-Besse atomic reactor's 908 megawatts of electrical output, as a cleaner, safer alternative to a 20 year operating license extension at the problem plagued plant. U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich (Democrat-Ohio) immediately rose to the environmental coalition's defense. Beyond Nuclear and its environmental allies plan to appeal to the federal courts at the earliest opportunity. Several weeks ago, the NRC Commissioners likewise blocked consideration of offshore wind as an alternative to a 20 year license extension at the Seabrook atomic reactor in New Hampshire. More.

Scientific panel releases report: recommends pilot studies on cancer risks in six US states

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has released its report, recommending that pilot studies be conducted around the following nuclear power facilities:

Dresden, IL; Haddam Neck and Millstone, CT; Oyster Creek, NJ; Big Rock Point, MI; San Onofre, CA and Nuclear Fuel Services, a uranium fuel fabrication site in TN.

NAS examined four different types of epidemiological studies and has recommended the use of two types that the panel felt were feasible and, if done properly, scientifically defensible.

Beyond Nuclear has issued a press release stressing the importance of public comment and participation. Comments are welcome for 60 days beginning April 1, 2012 and should be sent to crs@nas.edu or faxed to 202-334-3077. More.
