Citizens' groups request hearings on NRC Fukushima Orders
Pilgrim Watch and Beyond Nuclear have charged that an NRC Order recently issued to US reactor operators to upgrade thirty-one GE Mark I and Mark II Boiling Water Reactors on Fukushima lessons learned fails to sufficiently protect worker safety and public health during a potential severe accident through the installation of a new round of “reliable hardened vents” on unreliable containments. The groups contend that another NRC order fails to address the threat from high-density fuel pool storage at all US reactors, presenting unacceptable risks such as those now facing Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4. The Unit 4 reactor building (pictured left) is threatened with collapse in the next earthquake and a possible radioactive release significantly larger than the combined releases at Units 1, 2 and 3. A licensing board has been convened to review the groups’petitions. More.
