From Coast to Coast, Reactors Ripe for Retirement
All atomic reactors must be shut down, of course, but a number are especially ripe for permanent "retirement." Vermont's A.G. has received support from other states and environmental groups in his legal appeal seeking to close Vermont Yankee. New York's A.G. has called for the indefinite postponement of the license extension at Indian Point atomic reactors, until NRC carries out a court-ordered environmental assessment of high-level radioactive waste storage risks. Citing that ruling, Beyond Nuclear has filed motions against old and new reactors -- at Davis-Besse, Fermi, and Grand Gulf -- seeking to block license extensions and construction/operating approvals. Beyond Nuclear and allies have also written NRC's Chairman about the latest safety significant shutdown at age-degraded Palisades. NRDC has challenged the adequacy of NRC's regulations regarding degradation of safety critical wires once submerged underwater or exposed to high humidity -- part of the reason Fort Calhoun has remained shut down for over a year, after historic floods on the Missouri River submerged the entire site for weeks. And FOE has challenged San Onofre's restart, citing its need for a rigorous review of the defective design of safety critical, failing replacement steam generators. More.

Tell Australia’s government “no!” to new uranium mine!
Things are heating up with the fight against uranium mining in Western Australia.Toro Energy has received a recommendation by the Australian EPA for the approval of Western Australia's first uranium mine at Wiluna. This is NOT a done deal and the fight is building and gaining momentum. Our Australian colleagues are organizing a walk in August, driven by Traditional Owners. But right now, you can email the Australian State and Federal Environmental Minister and demand that plans for a dangerous, dirty uranium mine be halted at once. Please send a strong message and let State Environment Minister Bill Marmion and Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke know the world is watching and that West Australians don’t want the Wiluna uranium mine proposal at Lake Way. Go here to send your message. And please take a minute to watch the video EPA appeal from Mr. Glen Cooke an Aboriginal elder who lives in Wiluna.
Remembering Dr. Rosalie Bertell
We mourn the passing of Dr. Rosalie Bertell, age 83, who died peacefully on June 14. Rosalie Bertell, scientist and Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, was a tireless and compassionate advocate for those poisoned by chemical and radiological weapons and contamination.
Her book, "No Immediate Danger? Prognosis for a Radioactive Earth" published in 1985, was the first book to reveal the dangers of low-level radiation. More.
